John Deere 14st Lawn Mower Owners Manual
Welcome to the forum canuck88! At the page below I fond a JD 14SB repair manual that you should be able to download. Download: John deer 14sb repair manual at Marks Web of Books and Manuals. This manual should be considered a permanent part of your machine and should remain with the machine when you sell it. Measurements in this manual are.
I picked up a John Deere 14SB with a Kawasaki engine at an estate sale yesterday. I've always been kind of curious about them, and read good things from folks who have them. Brought it home, and was pleased when it actually started on the first pull after putting a bit of gas in it.
It surges quite a bit, so a carb cleaning is in the works. As usual, I was like a kid with a new toy, and started the clean up before I took any 'before' pictures. I'm impressed with what I've found so far. I tend to take things apart, clean everything up, and put it back together. I have a pdf manual for the engine, and I've been looking over the parts diagrams on John Deere's site, but I was wondering if anybody with experience with these can give me some been there done that suggestions before I get into the BBC. It came with a bag, and side discharge, but the bag is not the correct one for it.
I'm going to have to see what model this bag actually fits. It also came with a cover. The tag on the cover says 'Prototype.' This being the Quad Cities, (Moline, IL), the home of John Deere, I'd guess somebody there came by having it. Not sure this one is going to make me a convert from my Hondas, but it is a pretty stout mower. Surging seems a little odd to me, but I did notice it smoothed out when the blade was engaged. The carb gaskets were a little rough, so I'll pop in some new ones and see if it smoothes out a bit I bit the bullet and bought a service manual pdf online.
It confirmed what I thought, and like you said, the engine has to come off of the deck to remove the BBC. Which is a good thing anyway, because I found it has an oil leak, and I'm thinking it's the head gasket. Could be the pan gasket, but I can get a better look after the engine is off.
Here's what the manual says for changing the drive belt. REMOVE AND INSTALL DRIVE BELT—OGURA BBC (12SB, 14SB AND 14SE) 1. Remove engine.
Remove Ogura BBC assembly. Install new belt. Install Ogura BBC assembly. Install engine.
Guess I might as well order the belt now while I'm at it. You wouldn't happen to have an extra copy of an owner's manual, would you? All JD manuals are copyrighted and are therefore not free. JD has given printing rights to a few places for reprints but not many and collects a fee for each manual printed. I believe this site among others (WFM) have gotten into trouble when they posted/printed free manuals.
The got calls from JDs legal department quickly. Someone who owns a manual can sell it to you but can not make copies and sell it on E-Bay for example. JD paid to have the manuals written and printed. Before you go off on JD remember they are still in business and many of their competitors are not around any more. They are in business to make money. Don't take this as going off on John Deere for one minute. Of course they're in business to make money.
And they're doing very well. Come on down to my house for a visit and I'll take you by the John Deere harvester plant, in East Moline. We could even schedule a tour if you'd like, it's very fascinating. The factory has been featured on the History Channel. Or the parts warehouse out in Milan. I believe it's the largest such warehouse under one roof in the world.
How about John Deere Commons in downtown Moline, or what John Deere employees refer to as the 'glass palace', their international headquarters on 'John Deere Road' in Moline. As long as I've lived here, I still am amazed by the number of tourist who come just to see it. I can also take you by the houses on the bluff overlooking the John Deere factories where the Deere family once lived, including the house that John Deere himself lived in.
That one is in disrepair, but as I understand it, Deere & Co. Isn't interested in restoring it. With regards to walk behind mowers, if I'm not mistaken, John Deere has dropped them from their line because they weren't meeting their sales expectations, and have entered into an agreement with Honda to sell their walk behinds in John Deere stores. If I'm wrong on any of this, please feel free to correct me. Hey, Honda and the others are in business to make money as well, but anybody can look up, and download any one of Honda's power equipment owner's manuals on their web site. I believe Toro and MTD does the same, and all it costs is a bit of your time to make sure you have the correct model and serial number of your machine.
Jacobsen's customer service has been kind enough to provide me pdf copies of owner's manuals just for the asking via email. Some of them that weren't available online before, but are now, and I think it's a result of the number of people asking for them. I see the little © at the bottom of many of other brands manuals. I think I'd call making these available a public service, but I can't help but think it also covers some product liability issues as well. Not everybody buys new, and I doubt there isn't a one of us who hasn't had a manual go missing for one reason or another. So, even if I had bought this 14SB new, and had gotten an owner's manual with it, if it disappeared for some reason, I'd have to pay JD for another copy of it. Unless I just haven't found the correct link, why John Deere doesn't offer up free pdf owner's manuals online as a service to those who have their equipment seems a little strange in my opinion, and mind you, it's just my opinion(we all have one of those too) and in no way meant to 'go off' on John Deere.
They employ a lot of people in my neck of the woods, and in other parts of the world too. John Deere green is a very, very popular color around here. I'm glad they're in the business of making money.
I've bought a number of service manuals for other makes as well and I don't mind sharing the explanation given in parts of their contents with a member here who has a specific question about how to do such and such. I don't think many people here on this forum do. We see questions answered here all the time. We see requests for manuals all the time too. Not everyone is into collecting and restoring, or want to know everything there is to know about their mower, but would rather just know how to make the darn thing work.
I've searched for the 14SB owner's manual online till my fingers are tired of typing. I've seen the owner's manuals go from $25 for a printed copy, $30 for a CD version, and more than that on ebay.
I popped for a pdf of the 14SB tech manual online, and I'm happy with it. It's a quality copy. I can tell you this, though, they are not written as well as Honda's. Again, just my opinion, but one based on experience having now read both. Others might like John Deere's better.

So, anybody got an extra copy of an owner's manual laying around, or would be willing to copy. I'd be happy to pay for it, and postage. There is nothing in the owners manuel about how to change the belt or remove the bbc. Trust me you dont have to remove the bbc to change the belt.
I have changes 5 or 6 belts. ( i have a fleet of 12 of these). Deere sales of 21 walk mowers went south because they stopped selling the jx75 and went to personal pace type drive on all the rest. Most of the pros on the site i hang on would still be buying jx75 if deere still sold them. Even the low end deere like the jas 63 were great values for the $ and stealler preformers. Deere has missed the boat.
